Public Relations as an Ethical and Effective Persuader

The Ancient Greek and Roman scholars Aristotle, Isocrates, Cicero, and Quintilian, along with their writings on rhetoric, have had an enduring impact on the field of communication studies, especially "organisational rhetoric” (another term for PR), and subfields such as issues management and public affairs (see Heath 2006; Marsh, 2016). However, the “Hitler problem” (Gehrke, 2009 in Heath & Ihlen, 2018) captures the ethical challenge for rhetoric scholars, as it provides a clear example of how the techniques of persuasive communication can be used for ignoble ends. In this essay, I go through how public relations practitioners might draw from the teachings of the Ancient Greeks while also maintaining effective and ethical persuasion techniques.
